Replacing Parquet wooden flooring

Replacing a wood floor in any condition is always a challenge. When the flooring has been neglected for some time you can often only shake your head and sigh.

The good thing is, being wood flooring professionals, we know just what needs to be done to renew and rejuvenate a floor that’s been left in such abandonment.

But first, a little history.

Parquet or Parquetry comes from the French Parchet, meaning: small, enclosed space. Made popular in 1684, these large, diagonal squares were used to replace the existing marble flooring, which required constant washing and served to rot the wooden beams below. The geometric, mosaic design is used in two primary ways; in furniture and for flooring. Now, while straight boards of whatever wooden base material serve to give any home a sense of wonder and style, one cannot argue that upon entering a house, decked throughout with shaped patterns, one stares and delights.

Many a house graced with parquetry uses Pine, but Pine isn’t the only choice available; Walnut, Oak, Cherry, Lime, Maple and even, on occasion, Bamboo can be used.

When you need to clean your parquet wooden flooring, avoid using the vacuum cleaner. An upright cleaner is prone to leaving scratches, instead, try a brush and a mop.

Repair work is a specialized practice. You can see from the images below how the pieces simply lift from the floor. These boards were likely first lain with hot Bitumen, but these days we’ll use a modern cold adhesive to set those errant boards back down and put them in line. For anyone with a mathematical mind, parquetry is a joy.

To replace a parquet floor, we first look at the condition. We must ask ourselves just how degraded it is and estimate the scale of replacement boards required. Laying an entirely new floor is obviously a bit of a mission, while adding extra pieces to an already established floor can be equally time consuming, as is sanding the floor back to it’s base and then topping it off with the varnish or lacquer of the customer’s choice. But once the job is done, you can be happy in the fact that save for a few really raucous parties, that floor will stand the test of time.
